Why You Shouldn’t Start With Advertising

Aug 25, 2026 | Growth Strategy

When business slows down or new enquiries become less frequent, the first thought is usually simple:

"We need more advertising."

It's an understandable reaction.

Advertising promises visibility, more website visitors, and more opportunities to attract customers.

Sometimes, that's exactly what a business needs.

But not always.

Over the years, I've noticed the same pattern again and again.

Many companies don't struggle because they have too little traffic.

They struggle because the system behind that traffic isn't working as well as it should.

Advertising Doesn't Fix Broken Processes

It Simply Brings People To Your Business

Advertising has one job.

It helps potential customers discover your business.

Everything that happens after the click depends on your website, your team, and your internal processes.

If visitors can't quickly understand what you offer, they'll leave.

If enquiries sit unanswered for hours, they'll contact someone else.

If your sales process is disorganized, more traffic simply creates more missed opportunities.

Advertising exposes the strengths and weaknesses of your business—it doesn't solve them.

The Same Goal Can Have Different Causes

"We Need More Customers"

Imagine two companies making exactly the same statement.

"We need more customers."

The obvious answer seems to be running more ads.

But after looking more closely, the situations are completely different.

The first business receives very little traffic.

For them, advertising could make a significant difference.

The second business already receives plenty of enquiries.

People visit the website.

They send messages.

They fill out contact forms.

The real problem is that responses are slow, follow-ups are inconsistent, and many enquiries are forgotten.

Launching another advertising campaign won't solve that.

It will simply send even more potential customers into an inefficient process.

The Mistakes I See Most Often

Growth Doesn't Come From One Tool

Many businesses make similar decisions:

  • They launch advertising without understanding the customer journey.
  • They drive traffic to pages that don't encourage action.
  • They don't know where enquiries are being lost.
  • They manage leads manually across multiple platforms.
  • They have no CRM or clear follow-up process.
  • They measure clicks instead of business results.

Eventually, advertising gets blamed.

In reality, advertising often isn't the problem.

It's simply the first place where hidden weaknesses become visible.

Start By Understanding Your Business

Before Spending More Money

Before increasing your advertising budget, it's worth asking a few simple questions.

  • Where do most customers currently come from?
  • How quickly does someone respond to a new enquiry?
  • Is your website helping visitors make a decision?
  • Do you know exactly where leads are being lost?
  • Are your marketing and sales processes connected?

The answers usually reveal far more than another advertising campaign ever could.

Sometimes the right solution is Google Ads.

Sometimes it's a better landing page.

Sometimes it's CRM, automation, or improving internal communication.

Every business is different.

That's why the solution should always fit the real problem—not the other way around.

My Approach

I don't begin by recommending advertising.

I begin by understanding the business.

Only after identifying what's limiting growth can we decide which tools will create the greatest impact.

Sometimes advertising is the first step.

Sometimes it isn't.

Because sustainable growth isn't built by adding more tools.

It's built by connecting the right tools into one system.

Advertising can bring more visitors. Only a well-designed business system can consistently turn those visitors into customers. Real growth begins by understanding the problem—not by spending more on advertising.
